Begay (b.1927), a Fort Defiance, Arizona native, served in the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1966. He served from 1952 to 1953 in Korea with an anti-tank company in the 1st Marine Division. From 1964 to 1965, he served as a staff sergeant and tank mechanic in Vietnam. He married in 1960 and had six children.
